yesterday i mowed half of the house i'm staying at's lawn. i only mowed half because the grass was already about 6-8 inches long (a foot in some places.) i felt like i was mowing down a field. there was supposed to be a neighborhood high school kid mowing, but somehow that must have fallen through.
anyway, i do like mowing the lawn--especially because i get outside a bit. it reminds me of camp--where we trip leaders sometimes mowed lawns on our days off the water. one day at camp, my trip partner and i were given the task of mowing the ski hill--which had such tall grasses at that point that we had to cut it down with scythes then mow. i didn't go to quite those extremes yesterday, but i did have to weedwack some of the tall parts before the mower would mow.
all this to say, i experienced something new yesterday: an electric mower! see above photo. i've never even seen an electric mower before--and it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to use it. but, once i did, i really liked it. there is the hassle of having to move extension cords around the yard with you as you mow, but it was so much quieter than a regular mower, didn't require gas or pumping, and turned on and off with just a switch. also, apparently, they're much more enviromentally friendly. and lastly--i have no idea why this happened--but the mower didn't turn my shoes green. not at all!
i need to buy a mower when i move to missouri. i have a big yard--which will be great, but also a little hassle-ish. anyway, i'm now contemplating an electric mower...hmm... the only problem may be the yard size.
i'm also contemplating planting a big garden right outside the house. all the neighbors have trees all over their yards, and mine is just a big expanse of grass. (thankfully some of their trees shade lands on my lawn.) but, i would like to plant some plants that i don't have to do much work with, but make the yard seem a little homier. any ideas? i hear, so far, that forget-me-nots might be good. i'm also thinking about growing lavender. any other suggestions? i would love a lilac bush, but i hear they take three to four years to bloom. we'll see. maybe i'll bite the bullet anyway.
i also have that infamous hammock chair from college, which will finally sit in its rightful place in a lawn.
