This is an email from a friend:

"As I write the country [of Kenya] is in crisis. The presidential
elections of Dec.27 finally announced the president
at 6:30pm on Dec.30. The former president Kibabi was reinstated
within one hour of the announcement. The long delays in revealing the
votes, the very close count (a small margin) and the quick
reinstatement caused suspicion. Many were angered by this and
violence broke out around the country- following much violence the
previous day due to delays. Thirteen were killed in mob
violence around the country within minutes of the announcement.
Now we hearthat rival presidential candidate Riala is being inaugurated
in an alternative ceremony on Thursday. Basically, this means war! As
I write I can hear mobs chanting as they march down the road outside
and helicopters flying overhead. All quite frightening indeed!

Both candidates are from different tribes so the violence has turned
tribal. My housemate Maggie, a Kikuyu- the same tribe as Kibaki the former president, is fearing for her family's lives. Their friendly
neighbors from different tribes have become enemies upon hearing of
Kibaki's sudden reinstatement. Her sister's family was attacked by
neighbors throwing stones so they locked themselves in their house and
eventually fled to a friend's house. One group has taken up machetes,
others stones, and yet others are burning houses down. The news has
been blocked from local tv because they say
that showing violence hasonly incited others to more..."
