one note

i realize this blog is becoming increasingly homogenous: allie, school, allie, school, allie, school. well, i will post some photos here of my weekend trip to see allie (naturally). but in other news, i'm trying to figure out what to do this summer. (already? yes!) i've applied for two things so far--a grant with the american-scandinavian foundation to return to norway and a writing residency in sweden with the baltic writer's center. they're both long-shots, of course, but i'm hopeful.

what i do know is that i'll need to get out of columbia and do some traveling and/or living somewhere that's either exotic or has mountains, rivers, or a huge river movement church. norway would be ideal for my research, but i've also toyed around with the idea of going somewhere else international if i could find funding or otherwise, back to colorado/wyoming if i could find a job. this is the lovely but also high pressure nature of being a nonfiction writer (& one with a bent towards wilderness/travel writing): i get to, but also have to, have adventures.

i would love to get over to madagascar, where my friends daniel and sarah are--but i just haven't found any way to make that work. i'm interested in conceptions of wilderness there and also conceptions of wilderness in post-soviet countries. so, there are a lot of options. the catch is finding the money to pursue any of these.
